How do I get started learning S/370 Assembler?

There are many ways to proceed, but probably the most practical way is to grab Volker Bandke's Turnkey MVS system which comes with the free IFOX00 assembler as well as lots of other goodies. Once you have Hercules and the Turnkey system installed (Volker's Turnkey distro will do both), you can begin assembling and running your own S/370 assembler programs.

Not that MVS38j is the _only_ way to go. There are other S/370 systems in the public domain, such as VM, VSE, TSS, and so forth. But by far, you'll probably have an easier time with the Turnkey approach. It's a well supported distribution with lots of knowledgeable users.

Simply reading the tutorial should help you get started, but you'll get more out of the tutorial if you are able to experiment in your own MVS38j environment.

This tutorial will not cover how to install Volker's Turnkey system, execute jobs, or teach JCL. If you have questions on these topics please feel free to ask in the turnkey-mvs or hercules-s370asm groups.
